15 dozen people

hey team:

wanted to share some records with you all. today a total of 180 students were logged into the seat counts. at one time, we had 20 students here. i'm thinking there are a lot of projects due this week.

for those of you who have a hard time fathoming 180, let me give you some concrete examples. if i stood on top of my own shoulders 180 times, i'd reach halfway to the moon. if i had 180 dollars, i could invest that money in mid-cap mutual funds, receiving a 5% return on my investment for 20 years, then cash out and retire to a quiet pueblo in peru and still have enough to have four monkey butlers and a dancing cow. if i 180 elephants, i'd sack istanbul and reclaim it as constantinople to mess with future geography students. if i had 180 pounds of puddin', well, ahhhhh yeah, i just don't know what i'd do...

Firewire issue may be solved...

Last night Jes was having trouble getting ASH to connect to the DV deck. After a bit of cable checking, he found that the external power from the Apple display to the CPU was not connected. In addition to the power supply connecting to the 120v outlet, the display has a USB input cable that must connect to the back of the tower in order for it to supply external power to 1394 devices. I did not know this! Hopefully this will help us troubleshoot in the future.

So remember: if the display's Firewire port doesn't connect, it's not broken - it simply isn't powered up.

iMovie '08

Hey, guys. We don't officially "support" iMovie '08 here at NMC, but as time goes on, iMovie '08 will soon become relevant. Today a customer brought in her Sony Handycam HDD camcorder. We tried playing her clips in the old iMovie and Final Cut Pro, but there was no audio. She ended up leaving, but afterwards, I figured out that her camera is one of the many cameras supported in iMovie '08 that is not supported in the old iMovie.

From my understanding, this compatibility issue is for newer hard-drive based camcorders (as opposed to the mini-dv cameras of yesterday). So basically, the moral of the story is don't forget about iMovie '08 when it comes to someone brining in a hard-drive based camcorder to edit footage. It might just solve the problem!
