new camera and new computer option for students

Hi Everyone,

We have two little rays of sunshine bursting through the clouds of lab insanity. First, dv10 is brand new! Secondly, the iMac in the SSRL classroom is available for our students to use. If someone needs to capture video they can take a camera and a firewire cable down the hall. It also has design and web programs.

holla,
Amy

Animator's Roundtable!

Hi Y'all,

We are hosting an Animator's Roundtable on Thursday, April 26th in collaboration with WIFV, SOC and CAS.

This meeting will give students the ‘inside scoop’ on animation gigs. This is not a job fair, but rather an opportunity to find out what clients and employers are looking for in freelance and full-time talent these days. Come early to the screening to see student work. If you are interested in screening your work to possible employers, email Professor Maher (bmaher@american.edu) by Monday, April 23rd.

Ting a ling!

Yesterday, Wednesday April 13th the writer Kurt Vonnegut died at the age of 84.

He wrote the novels Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, Timequake, and others. Those three novels are some of my favorite ever and interestingly enough I have been semi-obsessed with Vonnegut since reading Cat's Cradle last year.

In fact, last night I started reading Breakfast of Champions. This is the last page I read before going to bed....

...Kilgore Trout is Vonnegut's fictionalized version of himself (in some ways).

So what does this all mean?...I dunno, but I think it is probably a "granfalloon."

generative systems

This thing is an amazing geek-fest on probability with self acclaimed "non-musician" Brian Eno and game designer-god Will Wright:

Let's talk copyright law

The Internet breeds misconceptions. The web deals in more than Nigerian email hoaxes and prescription scams. Many of us illegally use the Internet as a bottomless well of inspiration via Google image searches and as a copy/paste library. We don't know any better because all these copyright myths float around out there, and frankly, the vastness of the Internet means nobody is going to call you on it. HOWEVER, as creative types it's good to know you're protected.
copyright

THE ABSOLUTE BOTTOM LINE:
The minute you create something you own the copyright. You can post your creation naked on the Internet with out an "©" or any rights notification and it still belongs to you. Whoever grabs your work has the responsibility to find you. You don't need a watermark or tag as seen on Flickr or other sites for it to be yours. If violated, you can sue immediately or write a Cease and Desist letter to have it removed.

Do not be fooled by buzz words like "public domain" or "fair use." Just because your work is publicly available does not mean it's public domain, in fact, it's almost impossible for it to be unless you've been making movies since before 1923. The fair use exemption only applies if they are taking a small excerpt and using it for noncommercial purposes.
