Stealing is good!

Hey all,

Justin and I were talking about Lynda.com and how it would be great to download the tutorials to watch later. Luckily, there are various applications, plug-ins and such for obtaining streaming content from websites. And you can apply this to numerous applications, such as client work (ripping from YouTube) or perhaps, Lynda.com's tutorials.

For Firefox, go to downloadhelper.net to install the download helper extension. When you are on a page with streaming media, the download helper icon next to the address bar will flash if it detects any media. Click on the icon to see the list of media detected, then select the file you want and download it. We can confirm this method works with Lynda.

Vixy.net will allow you to take streaming flash video and convert it for download. It is great for YouTube.

Zamzar.com is another free online file conversion site. It won't take from an online source, but it will convert a local file on your hard drive.

You can also grab some streaming media using Safari's built-in tools. It is great for stealing things like songs from Myspace. While on the page with the streaming media, go to the Tools menu. Select "Activity." From there, look for a file with a large size (at least a couple MB's depending on the media). Highlight the file once you find it and do Apple C (aka Command C) to copy. Go to Tools again, and select "Downloads." And do Apple V (Command V) to paste. The file should begin downloading.

We hope you enjoy all these wonderful ways to steal streaming media.
